The Top CTV Shows in December 2021

It's an amazing time to be a television viewer, with many strong options for captivating and engaging programming across the streaming universe. In this post, we feature several important metrics for TVision's clients that are interested in understanding how and where viewers engage with CTV: Share of Time Spent, Attention, Co-Viewing, and Bingeing. We highlight the top five shows in each of these categories

What engaged viewers best in December of 2021? "The Witcher," which captured the largest share of time spent in the month - posted two seasons in the top 5. It was another thriller though, "Evil," on Paramount+ that captured attention best in the month. 

Viewers interested in more-family programming headed over to Disney+ for Marvel programming like "Hawkeye" (2nd in Share of Time Spent) and "Spidey and his Amazing Friends." The cartoon captured the top spot for co-viewing.

Top CTV Programs, by Share Time of Spent

Share of Time Spent ranks shows by the proportion of time viewers spent tuned to the content. For this report, we are specifically looking at time spent with new, original, episodic CTV programming.

While December is known for Christmas movies, it was a decidedly Halloween-ensque drama that captured viewer engagement best in the month. The Season 2 premiere of The Witcher on Netflix drove increased interest in Season 1 of the show as well. It's notable that The Witcher series took both the first and fifth spot on our list of share of time spent. Accounting for an impressive 9% of Share of Time Spent viewing on CTV in December.  Disney+ also captured viewing time with its programming , Hawkeye (S1) and The Beatles: Get Back.

Top CTV Programs, by Co-Viewing Rate

Co-Viewing Rate refers to the number of episode views with more than one person in front of the screen.

Family-friendly fare always does well for co-viewing and that's why it's no surprise to find two Disney+ entries on the list, Spidey and Friends and Welcome to Earth. Our co-viewing metrics also show that viewers spent time together catching up on Ozarks (Netflix) in advance of the January release of the final season.

Binge Rate measures the percentage of episode views where the viewer has watched 3 or more episodes in a single session.

What makes a good binge-worthy show? All kinds of factors contribute to a show's "binge-ability" but a good story line, compelling characters, and the ability to pay varying levels of attention without missing the plot all factor in. This month's list features binge-able rom-com's like Dash and Lily and Emily in Paris on Netflix, as well as tried and true favorites like The Big Bang Theory, which viewers binge on HBO Max.

Attention Index measures how effectively a specific program keeps a viewer’s eyes on the TV screen while the viewer is in the room with the TV on. These were the top Streaming shows for Attention this month.

Attention to visible measures how attentive viewers are while in the room when content is being streamed. Viewer's did not want to miss a second of Paramount+'s psychological thriller Evil 2, as it captured the most attention on CTV in December.
